June Lawncrest Community Design Open House

The June Lawncrest Community Design Open House was a great success! The event took place in the Grove on the afternoon of June 14. We welcomed and interacted with 125+ people from the Lawncrest neighborhood. We counted many children, teenagers, younger adults, parents/caregivers, and older adults. The attendees participated in various fun activities and interacted with the displayed design boards. They also discussed the designs with the project team. The project team included members of SITIO, SALT, Community Ventures, the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation and the Lawncrest Neighborhood Ambassadors.

During the event, we had many fun games, including giant banagrams, leaf rubbing and corn hole, to name a few. Teens shared their thoughts on the “moods” we put together for the new proposed library teen space. The children and their caregivers shared their desires for the types of play equipment and colors they would like for the playground. We also asked people to share with us their aspirations for the Lawncrest Rec Center and Library. Everyone enjoyed the delicious water ice and Philly pretzels from Fred’s Water Ice.

Our top takeaways from the meeting include:

  • Positive responses to the new designs

  • Concerns about security in regards to window grills and site lighting

  • Positive feedback about the flexibility/programmability of new indoor spaces.

  • Enthusiasm for the proposed Free Library teen space and new playground

  • Desire for more technology at the library.

Since the meeting, we have taken all the feedback into consideration. We are still working with Rebuild, PPR, FLP and the Councilwoman’s office towards improving the two facilities to benefit the community.

Stay tuned and stay connected!
